Forest Lakes development moves from concept to community

After years of careful planning and construction, Forest Lakes Country Club, a resort-style, residential community in West Hants, now has people living there.

“We’ve moved from concept to reality,” said Kristi Wenaus, Forest Lakes’ vice-president of operations and public relations, on a festive, sunny Sunday. “We have local families living here now and many locals using our amenities, such as our trail system.”

Terra Firma Development Corporation, the development team behind Forest Lakes, opened the site to the surrounding community on Sunday, Sept. 24, in an effort to not only showcase the development but to also support Habitat for Humanity, Nova Scotia. Hundreds of visitors were welcomed to see for themselves what the community offers.

“As we are no longer simply a construction site; we are an active, living community. We wanted to take this opportunity to showcase what life is like here at Forest Lakes,” Wenaus said, as people poured over many of the attractive features of living in Forest Lakes, like the first-ever (Jack) Nicklaus Design, 18-hole golf course in the Atlantic provinces, scheduled for completion in 2019.

The open house festivities started in the Welcome Lodge, a large, attractive, chalet-like structure, one of many amenities for residents to enjoy.

Another well-planned community amenity that was featured was the Boathouse, a portal for summer and winter outdoor activities on shimmering Cochran Lake. Not a resident? The public is invited to enjoy the marked, forested trails that wind throughout the site, beckoning walkers and cyclists alike. In the future, you’ll also be able to ride horses at the Forest Lakes’ equestrian centre.

Forest Lakes, which will eventually spread over its full 1,800 acre site, is more than a golf course or even a resort, Wenaus said.

“We are building a sustainable community,” offering a variety of housing styles, from single-family detached, to attractive duplexes and convenient condos for buyers and renters to call home.

“Our residents come from all over the world — as far away as South Africa, Germany and Dubai — not just to live, but to experience our culture,” she said.

“They see as spectacular what we take for granted,” she said, noting the beautiful, natural setting of sylvan Forest Lakes and the serenity and security of living in Nova Scotia, blessed with “the friendliest people.”

Locals also appreciate the natural serenity that Forest Lakes offers.

“It’s far enough from the big city, but close enough to the amenities that you need,” said Dr. Lance Schaefer, a Nova Scotian native who’s building a house at Forest Lakes.

“It’s really in touch with nature,” he said.

“In today’s society, we all run very busy lives,” he said. “It’s nice to come home to an area like this where you can recuperate and relax.”

Dr. Schaefer and family will live in a house that incorporates some of Forest Lakes’ sustainability aims; in his case, collecting rainwater for reuse.

“We know that when people buy into a community, there must be a certain level of amenities already there,” Wenaus said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time planning this development, putting the roads in, building the infrastructure. A lot of people think that a golf course (development) can be just for empty nesters,” Wenaus said, while others think it’s just for wealthy Europeans.

“We have young, local families and professional couples moving in, creating an excellent balance.” she said. “That’s what Forest Lakes is all about,” Wenaus said.

“It’s all about the balance of building a better community in a stunning natural setting where you can live the lifestyle you deserve.”
